Our story

Our story

Friendship, activities and support for people living with dementia and their carers, right here on the Wirral

Friends and volunteers sit and chat under a garden canopy hung with Dementia Together Wirral bunting on a sunny lawn.

How we started

In 2017 a national dementia charity closed suddenly, and the people it supported on the Wirral no longer had a community to turn to. Twenty volunteers stepped forward so that local support would not be lost.

We began with 100 members and registered as a charity the following year.

Today

More than 700 Friends and growing stronger

We support more than 700 Friends across the Wirral, people living with dementia and their carers who've chosen to be part of our community.

Over 60 volunteers, including musicians and activity leaders, give their time because they believe in what we're building. Two-thirds of them have cared for someone with dementia themselves.

All over the Wirral

Sessions at 20 locations, from West Kirby, Hoylake and Meols across to New Brighton, Wallasey, Birkenhead, Upton, Pensby, Heswall, Spital and New Ferry, and into Neston and Ellesmere Port.

Fundraising

Our income in 2025/26 was about £196,000, mostly from grants and donations, to help people living with dementia and carers here on the Wirral.

Difference

What makes us different?

We're firmly committed to changing lives on the Wirral

Not a franchise with a local postcode

Started by Wirral volunteers in 2017 and registered as a charity in 2018. Every session runs in local venues.

Friendship first

Music and connection matter to us more than diagnosis. Everyone is welcome.

We're clear about what we're not

We are not medical staff, and we do not provide nursing or crisis care.

Carers have lives beyond the caring role

We are planning trips for former carers, because friendships do not end when caring does.

Fundraising policy

Responsible fundraising

We never ask people living with dementia to donate or fundraise for us.

"My husband always asks me as soon as we have left the activity café, when we are attending the next one. He loves doing the jigsaws... it appeals to his competitive nature!"
