Volunteer

Join our volunteer team

We have more than 60 volunteers across the Wirral right now, and we're always looking for more people to join us. We ask for a minimum of just two hours a month, every new volunteer gets a full induction programme, and there's a role that fits your life.

Impact

What your time helps us do

More than 60 volunteers keep sessions running at 20 locations across the Wirral. Over two-thirds of them have cared for someone with dementia themselves, and that understanding is a large part of why our sessions feel the way they do.

Volunteer stories

In our volunteers’ words

Our volunteers say it best. Here, in their own words, is what giving their time to Dementia Together Wirral means to them.

After watching my mum living with dementia, I decided I would like to volunteer as a way of trying to help others in a similar position, so 8 years ago I became a volunteer with Alzheimer’s Society.

After watching my mum living with dementia, I decided I would like to volunteer as a way of trying to help others in a similar position, so 8 years ago I became a volunteer with Alzheimer’s Society. However, they closed on Wirral a couple of years ago. A few volunteers decided not to let some of the support groups close, so they formed a new charity, Dementia Together Wirral. To this day I help at one of their Memory cafes.

I’ve been in the shoes of the people who attend the cafes and we offer support and friendship. This is what makes my volunteering worthwhile. We can take away some of their isolation.

One of the main parts of my job is offering a sympathetic ear and listening whilst enjoying the company of so many lovely people.

I also help at other times, with collections at supermarkets, giving out information and talking to people about the service we offer, making tea at a music group whilst listening to live entertainment and helping to organise Christmas Lunch for the members, among other things which happen.

I find the job rewarding, whilst meeting new people, learning all the time, building friendships, broadening my horizons and giving back to society. It is so worthwhile, and I would recommend it to anyone seeking voluntary work. Who knows where it could lead you?

I have been volunteering for various charities since I retired about 4 years ago. I was introduced to DTW by my daughter who was helping out at a group called Musical Minds.

I have been volunteering for various charities since I retired about 4 years ago. I was introduced to DTW by my daughter who was helping out at a group called Musical Minds. I loved it from the first day I got involved which was mid 2019. Everyone was so welcoming and to see the clients enjoying themselves was such a pleasure.

It didn’t take long for me to realise that I wanted to get more involved and as well as the Music group, I have helped with fundraising in supermarkets and manning information tables. To see Carers speaking to our volunteers and realising that there are people out there who care and places that they can go to for help, is so rewarding. The carers can feel so isolated in their role and some of the groups provide much needed socialising for them as well as the person with Dementia.

I am now helping to run a memory café once a month and will soon be helping to run a craft afternoon.

I hope I will be able to contribute to this amazing organisation for many years to come.

My name is Suzanne and I am a volunteer at the Musical Minds sessions which are held monthly. The sessions are the highlight of my month and I look forward to them as we have such a laugh.

As my background is a care manager I am often found behind my desk these days, so getting back on the ‘floor’ and doing what I love really brightens my day. I wish I had time to do more.

What I love about DTW is that it’s all volunteer led, not for profit. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging. We are a fantastic team, and are included in everything.

What a joy it is to work with this Charity. It is so uplifting when you see the difference it makes to our lovely friends.

What a joy it is to work with this Charity. It is so uplifting when you see the difference it makes to our lovely friends. We are such a friendly group and it is a pleasure to be a Volunteer and reaching out to so many people. We have some lovely groups where we get together and chat and do activities. We also have singing groups so there are lots of things to cover all interests. We need new people to come and join us as Volunteers, you just need to be friendly and have a listening ear you will get so much out of your time spent with us.

I’ve been a Volunteer with this charity since it was formed in 2018 and it is one of the best to work for. You are welcomed into the team with open arms and looked after on your journey with them.

Questions

We're here to help. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.

Do I need experience?

No. We're looking for people who care about the Wirral community, not experience. We'll give you full training and support for every role, so you'll feel confident from day one.

Are there age limits?

We welcome volunteers of all ages. If you're under 18, we'll work with you and your parents or guardians to find a suitable role. Many of our volunteers are students, working people, and retirees.

Will I need a DBS check?

Some roles require a DBS check for safeguarding. We'll tell you upfront if your role needs one, and we'll cover the cost. It's a simple process and we'll guide you through it.

Are expenses covered?

Yes. We reimburse travel costs and any out-of-pocket expenses you incur while volunteering. You won't be out of pocket.

Is volunteering accessible?

We want everyone to be able to volunteer with us. Tell us your access needs and we'll find a role and venue that suit you. We're flexible about how and where you volunteer.

Still have questions?

Groups of friends, colleagues or family are welcome too. Get in touch and we'll help.
